[wormhole] Is it safe to assume that all new releases from major studios are high-def? And if so, when did the changeover occur? Often, when browsing online retailers, I see an older title that catches my interest, but I pass on purchasing because I assume it's not high-def. Even with my HD DVR and Smart TV, older DVDs don't have the clarity of picture I prefer. I'd welcome hearing from anyone who can summarize what's happening in the world of porn and high-def. Thanks in advance.
Blu-ray players came out in mid 2006, and the PlayStation 3 came out in November 2006. I'd guess that porn would have started releasing on HD DVD and Blu-ray that year, and probably ramped up in 2007. So use 2007 as the cutting off point to gauge the likelihood of the content being HD.
[ad verbatim from the Shout Box a while ago]Doctor Boris: I gotta geta new hard drive: asian tranny movies that are 1.2GBs per scene left no free space on my hard drive
Rear Admiral: The H.265 codec coming next year should help. You'll need a new computer or video card, but anything for the Asian tranny movies.
Jigaloo: It's the important things which count.
Steezo: It's the little things that count.
Doctor Boris: How will this new codec will affect the video file sizes?
Doctor Boris: I am desperately running out of space and am planning to get a new 3TB, 1T laptop and another 1TB laptop hard drives
Doctor Boris: I also want to get the new Kindle: Fire HD 32GB in the next 1-2 weeks. I already ordered the charger for it
Doctor Boris: I plan it to use as a PDF file viewer so I can view mostly magazines and some ebooks
Rear Admiral: H.265 encodes about 50% the file size of H.264.
Rear Admiral: Go ahead and order those drives, though; it will be 2013 before there is widespread file availability.
Doctor Boris: I gotta wait a month or so to save up the cash
Doctor Boris: I am also waiting for the 20% off any 1 item Staples coupon to be released
Doctor Boris: these 20% off are really handy when the item is already on sale and you have a bunch of Staples Rewards checks - a good way to make a stacked purchase. I called these stacked deals "Lunar Specials" because all the factors align to form an excellent deal
Rear Admiral: You're really patient. Staples is a place I would ordinarily avoid for computer stuff.
Jerkules: Somtimes they have very good sales on External Drives and laptops. They also price match, if you bring an ad.
PipeD: That no one gives a shit about image quality is thoroughly understood. 1.5 GB per half an hour is ridiculously small. New codecs just used to save storage space will only extend what Apple and others are doing already: Selling shit not worth buying in ter
PipeD: ms of visual fidelity.
Rear Admiral: Yes but half the file size = higher quality at same file size
Rear Admiral: Kink.com file sizes are instructive. WMVs are smaller, but shitty.
PipeD: Potentially, if that is what the codec achieves. In actual application Apple began to offer 1080p content for television programming and the release groups deliver it just like them. The files look sharper than their 720p counterparts and are a fourth mor
PipeD: e in size. It does not hold up on any good, decently-sized monitor.
PipeD: Kink.com files I only know from their BehindKink.com BTS site and very few exceptions. While they might look good, I never saw any 1080p content posted anywhere, so maybe they do not offer it or the release groups do not deliver. Anyone in doubt could loo
PipeD: k at Brazzers content and ask themselves why a company as large as them are offering the best material, image-wise.
PipeD: Their savings on storage in data centers and traffic volume to their users would be immense.
Rear Admiral: 720p and 1080p are roughly equivalent anyway.
PipeD: You are mistaken. The former is about half the amount of pixels of the latter. No upscaling can alleviate this. Once in actual 1080p territory, bitrates count. The container format, thus WMV or MP4 or something else does not matter much.
PipeD: Then it would be on to the framerate the video was captured in, which lenses they used on which camera, if they used any. A camcorder is not a camera.
PipeD: It is quite easy to understand if internet traffic is seen as a form of currency. Manwin is on the way to become bigger than it is now. They seem to have a war chest and can afford to offer better quality than others. Elegant Angel maxes their HD online
PipeD: releases out at 8 MBit/s while Brazzers use 12 MBit/s. That is the top of the online release line in porn. Blu-Ray Discs offer a lot more, up to around 30 MBit/s or so.
Rear Admiral: H.265 will offer same 1080p quality at 6 MBit/s. Brazzers will save on bandwidth.
PipeD: That would be good for them, if that is actually getting done. They will, however, not offer better quality unless they need to.
PipeD: And since there is nothing really competing on the market right now, next year the situation should be about the same.
Rear Admiral: You know I just watch these files while masturbating, right?
LouCypher: he geeks hard but his heart is in the right place. and it seems he knows his shit.
PipeD: [Yawn.]
PipeD: Let there be VHS for everone.
LouCypher: i'd be careful with the [Yawn.] bit. you walk around here breathing heavy with your mouth open someones going to put something in it.
PipeD: [...]
