I was looking into double edge safety razors and came across this forum. It focuses on shaving but also has subforums relating to men's hygiene, clothes, booze, tea, coffee, tobacco and so on.

I browsed that board a bit. Who are those people? Hipsters? English Chaps? It's an odd demographic...men who discuss grooming on a forum. Sounds like a great place for Panzer or TattyPatty

Shaving and grooming used to be a great deal. Either the pilgrimage to the barber shop for a trim and a good shave or the personal ritual of preparing the hot water, lathering, dealing with the razor, etc. Nowadays it's a three minute thing you do after showering. I guess the board is for those who want to go back to the ritual. That and some hipsters who want to glom on. But they don't seem to shave much anyway.

Barber shops are a dying breed in my area. The legitimate barber shops(some are still fronts for gambling/drugs) around here were packed at lunch time, afternoons and weekends. I don't get it. It looks like the market would be open for way more than there are around.

Podunk town near me has 2 barbershops. They were across the street from each other, now they are on the same side, couple doors down. They have been feuding for years. If a guy tries to check the crowd in both then go in one, they throw him out.

We finally have a decent barber shop here; when i shaved my head i would go see the dominicans and their ilk. the coloureds know how to do outlines. it's nice to have a spot where dudes can hang out and it's mostly honkies. yeah, it's a little bit forced, but it's run by an italian who used me as a head model when he was in barber school 20 years ago and it's affordable.

I'd try them just for the "Walkens" joke.

old timers would go to the barber shop to catch up on town gossip, sneak a look at the playboys, chat up old friends. Things are too rushed now, but there is something delicious about taking a good 5-10 minutes to take down a proper shave, even if it's at home. Hot water, moist towel, good quality soap, a sharp safety razor (or if you are bold, a straight razor) and a soothing after-shave balm. It's the third element of a proper sh*, shower, and shave. Good way to start the day.

My girl's brother is into the whole old timey shaving thing. I kind of get it, I suppose. It think it's based on enjoying the ritual that shaving...grooming...whatever...used to be. He's been hassling me to make him a "shaving scuttle". I don't have the molds to do it, but I made him a shaving brush/ razor caddy. I'd imagine he's on that forum. His family's kind of that way. Making they own cheese instead of getting it from Obama.

Just the opposite here. Shops began popping up here about ten or so years ago. Began seeing bumper stickers and t-shirts around that time, and thought it a bit odd. Get in where ya fit in, I guess.

I've got at least 5 shops within a few miles. They're like the new tattoo parlor, in a way. Their promotion styles are similar, but they're lousy with hipsters mostly.

Anyhow, I've been using double edge safety razors for a couple years now, after having gotten tired of the expense of other types. Takes a little getting used to, but I haven't even put a dent in my first box of razors.

Barber shop or barber salon?? To me there is a difference. Barber shop means utilitarian and no hairwash stations. Usually smell like barbicide and talc.Straight guys mostly over 30 are the barbers. They look like they learned to be a barber in the military or in prison.

Barber salon is a hairdressing establishment with a masculine facade but the "barbers" are women, faggots and/or hipsters. They try to look retro and the closest they achieve to masculine is metrosexual.

Agreed. Barber shop. Men. Hot towel, straight-razor shave, cold beer, shoe shine service, and pomades type shit. Maybe its resurgence is a regional thing at the moment.

I've been lurking there and at any given time the site has between 1300 and 1500 people browsing the board. Kind of fucked up.

Check this out.
