Oh yeah, and the best album of that decade.............

Thriller- Michael Jackson

Other mainstream things I like/liked at the time:
Steely Dan
Little Feat
Lucky Star by Madonna
Joni Mitchell- Don Juan's and Hejira
Go-Go's
Bangles
Concrete Blonde
Zappa
Return to Forever
Brand X

Years later I came to love 80s hip-hop, but at the time I didn't hear much of it.

I was picking up Megadeth albums at the time, but I was a Team Metallica guy. Looking back comparing apples and oranges total body of work...consistent quality over the years...Lars and James may have won the "success" battle, but Uncle Dave wins the war. Metallica's body of work, after ...and Justice for All, has been pretty spotty.

But for the paucity of punk,I damn near agree with everything on this list.

Except for the Smithereens. I fucking hated those guys. Something about their sound didn't sit well in my brain.

Kind of like that guy who had seizures every time he heard Mary Harts' voice.

Here's a curve for the thread. Acts or songs you would have never admitted to liking back then but later became favs. Guilty pleasures:

For me, it's Hall and Oates- I Can't Go For That.

Some of these I still listen too, others sound like nails on a chalkboard to me now. Mostly due to associations.

Interesting. They seem to be doing a cover of a cover.

The Bird and The Bee is a successful group featuring Inara George, daughter of Little Feat's Lowell George.
They have a full album of Hall and Oates covers that is fucking awesome.

They also have a kiler cover of Bee Gee's How Deep is Your Love

Huey Lewis

The only thing about getting older I like is being able to publicly broaden my musical tastes without judgments or recriminations bothering me. I set winamp to random and the music cycles from phish to AC/DC to Erik Satie piano music to Harry Chapin to Billy Joel and I don't give a fuck what anyone else thinks even if they decide to comment.

Not too long after Touch of Grey came out I started working a job where several of my co-workers were serious Deadheads. I tried like hell to get into them in the early 1990s but couldn't even though I liked In the Dark. Yesterday I got my 66th live Grateful Dead CD set in the mail. 62 of them I have bought in the last three years.

I tried several times to get into the Grateful Dead over the years but just couldn't. It was "Freaks and Geeks" that did it. A teacher in that series recommended "American Beauty" and listening to that album made it click for me.

Tons. A lot of hair metal bands. Skid Row and Motley Crue. Not Slaughter, LA Guns or Keel.

A lot of Top 40 stuff. Springsteen.

I agree it's easier as you get older to be open to more stuff because there's not the pressure from your friends to like or not like whatever act. And I was one of the horse's asses who dogged on people for liking lame shit.

I lived through the 80's. There were performers who made some questionable artistic choices. But, for the love of God... I don't know how this happened.

Willie Nelson was the grand opening artist at the local sports arena back in the 80's. People were smoking so much weed that there was a blue cloud over the arena floor. I remember the harmonica player wound up being the star of the show.

My first concert was George Thorogood and the Destroyers/ZZ Top. We got lost on our way to the Spectrum in Philly and missed about 90% of Thorogood.

It just came out that AC/DC is scrapping their plans for an album & 40th anniversary tour. Seems Malcolm Young had a stroke a few weeks ago and he can play, just not play how he needs to.

I found this band on youtube and apparently they were huge. The holocaust was bad, but we should have fucking killed every single german for this shit. It's amazing; I guess these guys were stars and then broke up. Their solo vids are even worse. And fuck Europe.

To call these guys fucking faggots is an insult to gay guys. Their songs are just 'cool' sounding english words shoved together. I hope both these guys got AIDS. I was gonna post this in the hatred of Steve Holmes thread.
