Timely. My friend died yesterday. I assumed, at 42, he died young due to his health problems. Now they're speculating he was robbed and murdered. This was a really nice guy with a huge network of friends and family. Always working. Always helping people out, and many times not making enough time for himself because he put himself last just to make others happy.

Turns out my friend died from health complications. I guess that's better than murdered. I don't know how these rumors get started.

This has to be one of the best business deals in history.

I listened to 2/3 of the Judo Gene LeBell edition of the Joe Rogan podcast on my drive home today. Friggin Devils game on WFAN. Very fun listen. I just watched a Capt. Lou Albano shoot interview the other day where he was touting Karl Gotch, so hearing LeBell talk about Gotch and Lou Thesz was pretty cool.

I just ripped holy hell with the oderiferous ability to peel the fucking paint off walls and walked to the backroom of the store, crop-dusting this majestic gift of toxicity behind me just in time for a sweet, young couple to walk in the door. I mean, they HAVE to smell it. I should be embarrassed, but nah, I'm gonna' revel in this moment.

I saw a new style 3D movie today for the first time. I was impressed. My kid jumped in his seat 2 times thinking stuff was coming out of the screen at him. It was Frozen. The 3D Mickey Mouse short at the beginning was even really good. Shit is light years from The Creature From the Black Lagoon in 3D on UHF back in the day.

When done right, like in Avatar and Tron: Legacy, the 3D-effect can be nice, but usually it looks as if someone just added a few layers during post-production and gave them a pseudo-dimensionality for the fun of it.

It's not exactly magical and doesn't really add much to most films I saw with the feature.

Adoption at home is probably underwhelming for the people pushing the Blu-Ray Disc 3D standard.

I wondered if the animation aspect made the effect better.

The movie was in 4k HD. I read somewhere this week that it will be a while before 4k takes off for homes, because of the bandwidth required for it.

I have still never seen an IMAX movie. Any opinions if IMAX is cooler than 3D?

that judo gene pcast was excellent. i knew almost nothing about the guy beforehand and was amazed at what a badass gene was. from bruce lee to stuntman and the original mixed martial artist. fucken powerful dude and a great personality.

I saw Up, also an animated feature film, in 3D, too and it was roughly the same with the rather obvious layering of elements.
That there isn't anything physically captured could provide better opportunities to apply the technology.
Eventually, it just isn't that much and a nice gimmick when applied correctly.

4K in cinemas and in combination with 3D can mean that you get 2K per eye, a bit over 1080p each. It doesn't look bad though, even if 1080p isn't really that high definition anymore when you're used to seeing it about every day for a few years.
4K screens or UltraHD, which seems to be four times the resolution of 1080p, if I'm not mistaken, will probably take an eternity to be available on something similar to Blu-Ray Discs and I wouldn't count on a reliable service to stream crisp streams in the format with not much compression either, connection speeds generally not being that futuristic and companies wanting to be cost-effective.
Some content provider might offer something which won't look like LEGO deluxe and charge a lung, a testicle and an eye for it, but unless there isn't anyone actively profiting from decreasing quality in the streams offered to keep the data volume transferred as low as possible, it'll be some exotic premium model not delivering the full potential in terms of visual fidelity just like 1080p streams and most dowloaded video content in comparison with Blu-Ray Disc material today.
It's basic greed.

The Avatar screening I saw was in IMAX 3D and it was pretty good.
Since the projection was shot, edited and projected digitally, it didn't offer any details 70mm film might surpass 35mm film in and the sharpness looked the same compared to digitally projected features not in IMAX 3D to me. That's hardly surprising when the projector was the same a few times, I guess, so the actual difference, if there is one, wasn't obvious.
