When a young girl, Amanda McCready, goes missing in Boston, the case attracts widespread media attention. Private investigator Patrick Kenzie (played by Casey Affleck) and his partner and girlfriend Angie Gennaro (played by Michelle Monaghan) are hired by the child's Aunt Beatrice to find her. Kenzie and Angie discover Amanda's mother Helene and her boyfriend "Skinny Ray" had recently stolen money from a local drug lord. After Ray is murdered, Patrick and Angie join the police detectives investigating the case, Nick Poole and Remy Bressant, to arrange a trade of the money for Amanda. Police Captain Doyle shows Kenzie a telephone transcript of the drug lord setting up an exchange for Amanda. The exchange at a nearby quarry in Quincy is botched and Amanda is believed to have drowned. Captain Doyle, whose own daughter was also killed years before, takes responsibility and goes into early retirement.

Two months later, a seven-year-old boy is abducted in Everett and Kenzie receives information that the boy was taken by a known child molester. After entering the house and finding evidence of the abducted boy, Kenzie returns later with Nick and Remy to rescue him. They are seen by the residents and Nick is shot. Kenzie enters the house and finds one of the residents dead. After being shot at, Kenzie retreats into the child molester's room. He finds the child molester in the room and the boy's dead body in the bathroom, and kills the child molester.

Nick later dies in a hospital. Trying to alleviate Kenzie's guilt over the murder, Remy confides in Kenzie that he once planted evidence on someone. During the story, Remy inadvertently reveals that he knew "Skinny Ray" prior to Amanda's abduction. The fact that Remy lied during the investigation puzzles Kenzie, who speaks to a police officer after Nick's funeral. The police officer tells Kenzie that Remy had been asking about the drug lord's stolen money before the drug lord knew it was missing. Kenzie questions Amanda's Uncle Lionel and pieces together that Lionel and Remy conspired in a false kidnapping in order to take the money for themselves and to save Amanda from her mother's poor parenting. At that point, Remy enters the bar and stages a robbery while wearing a latex mask and holding a shotgun. He points the shotgun at Lionel's head, but the bartender shoots Remy twice in the back. Remy flees and is pursued by Kenzie to the rooftop of a nearby building, where he dies.

Kenzie is later questioned about Remy's death, and discovers that the transcript that led to the botched exchange for Amanda was a forgery. Kenzie drives with Angie to Captain Doyle's home looking for answers. He discovers Amanda is alive and living very happily with Doyle and his wife. A flashback reveals Amanda's death was staged, and that Doyle was a part of the phony kidnapping all along. Kenzie threatens to call the authorities, but Doyle attempts to convince him that Amanda is better off living with them than with her drug-addicted, careless mother. Kenzie departs to discuss the choice with Angie, who says she will leave him if he calls the police. The police arrive and Doyle is arrested. Amanda is reunited with her mother, and Kenzie and Angie break up. Kenzie later visits Amanda and Helene as Helene is about to leave on a date. She has no babysitter and just plans on having a neighbor check on Amanda, so Kenzie volunteers to watch Amanda. The film ends with Kenzie and Amanda watching television.

Brilliant. Cinematography reminiscent of City of God, but it's so much more. What would have already been a gripping story told in a mere linear form, has been broken up into pieces and reassembled into a work of art.

That's why I like Renfield. She can give a good critique/review of a movie without revealing too much of the plot in case other posters haven't seen it.

Death Race


I haven't heard many good reviews of this flick but I liked it- mad max in a prison with guns on the cars + Jason Statham and al swearington from Deadwood. How can you go wrong.

Hard Boiled-I don't know what Hollywood executive has John Woo's balls or what mason jar he is keeping them in but they need to be returned to their rightful owner. Best action movie ever, makes Die Hard look like a Nora Ephron film.

Dead Like Me: Life After Death (2009)

I was a fan of the show but this follow up movie (set 4 years after the show) left me cold.

I didn't hate it, it just wasn't what I expected. If you were a fan of the show it is worth checking out just know that it isn't like the show.

My favorite part is when the played audio tapes of John Ehrlichman telling Nixon about the Kaiser Permanente model of providing less care and making more money to which Nixon reply's "I like that idea"

It really is stunning how inferior our system is compared to other western nations. We seem to have the best medical schools, some of the best doctors and yet we provide the worst care.

Not a movie but I just finished the series "American Gothic"...Gary Cole is amazing as Sheriff Buck...I developed a crush on him after watching these...

Hmm. I liked Captivity. Not great, but entertaining.

Today:

Requiem for a dream. Was the first time I watched it. Great movie, great music. Easily 9/10.

Untraceable - Nice script, except for the predictable ending. I liked the new ideas for torture that were in the movie. Probably not graphic enough for hardcore horror lovers, but good enough for me.

It wasn't as funny as the book....

A classic Ghost story anthology. It's old, but Still one of my favorites. If you find the uncut version, it's about 45 minutes longer.

Premonition... with Sandra Bullock

The first half of Angelheart. I hadn't seen it for years and forgot just how good it is.

Love the scene with DeNiro pealing the shell from a boiled egg while telling Rourke that the egg is a symbol of the soul in some cultures then he takes a big bite of it...great symbolism. I'll watch the second half tonight.

I actually like her stuff... usually.. but what movie is that, sounds good!

I just looked it up it's called "The Vanishing"

That version of the Vanishing is great, the european original is better but that one still holds its own. Highly recommended

The girl next door (2007) - Meh. Boring, so I stopped it halfway through. I saw 'An American Crime' a few months ago and I think that one was better.

I watched Capote with Phillip Seymour Hoffman. He is a brilliant actor and gave an excellent performance.

Milk. I thought it was a documentary about dairy products but this movie was about homos, not homogenization. I enjoyed approximately 2% of it but skimmed through the rest. On the whole, it moved quickly past your eyes.

Pink Panther 2, yes, the Steve Martin version.

I am NOT a fan of Michael Moore and have hated his other films because of their unprofessional quality and the misinformation they contained.

This documentary wasn't any more polished or professional looking then the rest but I can't fault the facts presented. It made me ashamed to be an American.
