I don't make much of an Everclear/ Nirvana connection. Everclear was gloomy lyrics, but a very accessible pop sound.

My question is would Nirvana be relevant today had Cobain not taken himself out? I've always thought that they peaked and were on the downslide musically. Not to say In Utero sucked, because it was a nicely solid album. But the audience was moving on.
