I'm not sure Snowden has thought this through. The problem with living in exile for the rest of his life will be that he has to live with foreigners who are so very...foreign. Even when a person enjoys living abroad for extended periods of time, it ain't easy. And once you've hit 30, if you haven't become fluent in another language, the odds are very slim that you'll become fluent in another language.

Well "technically" it is neutral, but on a practical level, if the Russians want someone they will go in and arrest them. It's more of a legal fiction for the host country. France, for example, will move people from one neutral area to another, and the vehicle used is considered a moving, "neutral" bubble of its own.

I think the process will unfortunately have to be the punishment. His first choices for safe haven were Hong Kong and Iceland. Nice places to live, first world countries, easy enough to get around with just English, the creature comforts he needs. Venezuela on the other hand, is most definitely not the first world, and toilet paper is considered a hot commodity on the black market.

I think he thought he was going to live a Jason Bourne movie. Temporary stay in Hong Kong, followed by "asylum" in a nice Northern European country, albeit without the gun fights and car chases because he had "leverage" in the form of the encrypted caches. Make a living as a "white hat" hacker/activist hacker either as a freelance consultant or aligned with some NGO. His knowledge of the world outside computers seems very crude. For example, he didn't seem to anticipate his passport being revoked and was shocked, shocked, shocked that the government would resort to such measures.

He may have to live out his days in a small apartment redolent of old cabbage and sweat. I don't think the FSB is going to be handing him the keys to a nice condo or suite at a premier hotel. I hope he gets really slow and spotty internet access.

It's a one-year asylum, as I understand it, which suggests Putin's convinced he's gotten what he needs and doesn't feel bound to do more. . .

. . . which also suggests that Mr. "look at MEEEEEE" merely confirmed what anyone with half-a-brain already suspected, and no one with a quarter-of-a-brain would have wasted their lives for.

Hubris wastes more folks than bullets.

I fucken hope so. I'd love to think Six is looming behind his nearest closed door with suppressed weapons drawn but it will most likely be something subtle and tragic like cancer of the aids that takes him out in 2021.
