Ok. I know as few of you are up on you SW knowledge, so Iwas hoping that spmeone could either tell me or direct me to a site where it is easlily laid out as far as what was supposed to occur in the sequals to episode 6. Originally lucas wanted to make 9 SW movies right? So what was supposed to occur in the final 3? I just watched 4-6 on the new dvds and they were great but I am left wanting to know how it tis supposed to end.

I read a few of the books by Timothy Zahn, which were supposedly endorsed by Lucas as the follow-ups to the orginal film series.

Long story short, they were shit. Takes place five years later, Leia is carrying the 'next' Jedi in her womb, and the Empire (well, at least the fragmented version of the Empire) is looking to take the baby. They want to create another heir to the throne of Vader while also trying to re-establish the next Empire and build another Death Star.

There is a lot of stuff of Han and the guys running around trying to establish a New Republic, open trade routes etc. Not very interesting.

I read two of the three and they were shit beyond belief. Nothing happens, no real conflict, just boring. I couldn't manage the third.

Zahn is a legitimate SF writer, too good really for this sort of thing, especially for a control freak like Lucas. Worse, Zahn writes hard SF and Star Wars is not hard SF.

I haven't read Zahn's SW stuff but I imagine you're seeing why "real writers" shouldn't do novelizations.

Arthur C. Clarke's 2001 is about the only case I can think of where a professional author got involved in a movie novelization and succeeded. But that was a unique case - nobody else does the process like Kubrick & Clarke did.

It already ended. The Emporer dead, Vader redeemed, universe free again.

If you want really interesting SW stories, try Tales of the Jedi.
The two-bladed lightsaber was first created by Lord Exar Kun, not Darth Maul.

In those book follow ups did Luke ever turn to the Dark side? Or is the dark side dead after episode 6?

The Dark Side never dies. They fucking cloned the Emperor. It was a very stupid story.

Yes, yes, this is definitely the geekiest thread I've ever participated in, but hey, I love Star Wars...

even Jar Jar.

I just wanted to say, I never read Arthur C. Clark's 2001, but Kubrick's filmic adaptation of the book ranks easily in my top ten of greatest movies ever made. I have a hard time watching the stargate sequence, even after mulitple viewings, as it is so disconcerting, and, for lack of a better word, creepy.

Clarke and Kubrick were definitely a match made in heaven. Sadly, that can't be said about the Kubrick/King pairing on The Shining. LOL!

It´s the other way around.

Clarke wrote a short story, THE SENTINEL, that Kubrick optioned.

Both collaborated on a script of what later became the movie.

And only THEN, after the movie was done, Clarke wrote the novelization - that even contradicts the movie ending (and the sequels) on a major way.

Clarke was writing the novel all along. But the movie script had to freeze long before the book, and in the interim, astronomers managed to rule out parts of the script. Clarke is a hard SF writer so he moved the book setting from Jupiter to Saturn get around the problem. The result of the tinkering was significant differences between book and movie.

Clarke generally didn't do sequels - I can't think of any until much later - and of course Kubrick never did them. I don't think they ever considered sequels at all.

there is some.. but its more about the Yuuzahn Vong and its invasion of the galaxy and the threat it poses to the New Republic AND the Remanant (empire). i want someone to write some Sith Era novels... that would be awesome.

The whole sith thing is what confuses me- was the emperor sith and if so are they all gone at the end of VI?

the emperor was Sith, he was a very old sith lord who had many clones. and despite the death of Vader and the emperor the Sith still exists, as it is a natural counterpoint to the jedi.... not all dark side users are Sith Lords... actualy the Epire had many Darksiders ("Dark Jedi") working for them. they werent Sith though... however they could become and learn to be a sith. much like how not all light siders are Jedi.

but yes, the sith lives on

Thanks for the info Rob, that is good news because the universe of SW would be boring with just goody 2shoes running around.
