This is waaaay off topic, but the Image Zoom extension is useful.

Under Tools select Extensions. In that box click Get More Extensions.

On that web page look for Image Zoom which is under Page Display if not a Most Popular. Install this.

After restarting FireFox go back to the Extensions box, select Image Zoom, and click the Options button.

If you have a wheel mouse enable "Use RMB+wheel ...". Then you can go to any picture on a web page, press and hold the right mouse button, and scroll the picture size up and down with the mouse wheel.

Even if you don't have a mouse wheel there are other useful image zoom tools on the right-click context menu over an image.

Every time someone complains about something IE won't do right I tell them to use a browser that will work right. I consider that a "How do I..." thing for moderators to answer.

I may get worse. I think there's a way to disable referrer logging, which may solve a lot of the "missing image" problems people see here (where an image won't appear if you click the link but will if you copy it to the address bar).

That is a pain in the ass. I'm to lazy though to stop using IE, I'm Microcrap pre-programmed.

You can change the network.http.sendRefererHeader key to 0 to disable it, is that what you meant?

The Web Developer extension gives you a handy button for controlling this.

But I haven't "caught it in the act" - I haven't proven there's an image that loads with referrers off. Referrers are needed for some web sites.

Firefox is a fantastic browser, been using it for ages. Started with Moz 1.0, moved to 1.6, then changed to FF 0.5, now I have 1.0 installed...

The only time I use IE now is through Win updates.

It's at 1.0PR (Preview Release). Not quite "1.0" yet.

Uh, I just found that out. I also found out a lot of my favorite extensions aren't available. yet. Just have to wait I guess.

it's stable, but considerably more annoying about installing plugins and extensions so i'd keep a copy of the old version set up how you like it if you hate the new "features" as much as i do. it's stupid to block mozdev and other obviously legit places from installing xpi's by default and i deeply mistrust anything that wants to update itself. on the other hand, i'm probably pretty far towards the luddite camp and generally try to avoid pictures, let alone things that move around on the screen or anything remotely script/media-content-ish.

btw jrv, what does the web developer do that's useful for regular browsing? i hesistated to install it, i've pretty much got stuff how i like it but it's a pain to change stuff on the fly when you can't do it through the gui.

As far as I can tell Web Developer does no harm when installed - it merely adds menus and a toolbar.

"Disable referrer logging" is the feature that may help linked images appear here. Zoom might be useful in some cases.

Does Firefox actually update itself or merely check for updates?

OK, in this thread:

http://www.xxxporntalk.com//ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=dvdtalk&Number=53969&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1

I normally don't see the pictures in the first and third posts. But if I use the Web Developer extension to Disable Referrer Logging then I do see the pictures.

i'd actually already set the value to zero, but i decided to give the extension a shot and it's great in the sense that you can do some stuff on-the-fly that are a pain in the ass to hunt down and change manually, thanks for the advice. i'm paranoid about extensions since if you don't like it, firefox does a lousy job at uninstalling them completely, which sucks when the supposedly uninstalled extension that broke some other function left the problematic values in your registry.this one's a keeper so far though.

my gripe with the calling home thing is not only is it a step away from why firefox, k-meleon, etc. were created but also that just unchecking the box doesn't totally disable the function. from what i can figure out, it looks like all it does is really disable the notifications, so it's sending the data unless you turn it off outside of the normal options menu. probably harmless, but i don't see any reason for it.

Well, you can always don your super-geek cape and edit extensions.rdf to get rid of extensions. Carefully. After making a backup.

There are a few websites that need referrer logging to work right (sometimes the Add-to-Cart button uses the referrer URL to know what to add to the cart). So setting it manually to zero always might be a problem.

I'd post this as a question to developers if not already discussed in Google. It's something they'd take seriously.

A quick sniff of an update cycle says nothing is being sent for extension or theme updates. Merely checking for an update it not harmful; trusting an update offered as a result of this is where the risk lies.

FireFox itself is doing its update under SSL so I can't see what's there but there does seem to be a lot of data involved, far more than I'd expect. I'd have to pull down the source code to see what's happening (assuming FireFox isn't written in some exotic language).

i seriously doubt there's anything sinister to the update process or that it would install something without notification. it's just that when you look at even when you disable the feature through the options menu, you get an update interval of 7days and several "true" values where you wouldn't expect them to remain. i'm being lazy and using the preferential extension(which i'd definetly recommend-if you like web developer you'll appreciate it), but there shouldn't be a discrepancy between it and the .js entries.

hardly a real security threat, i just like to keep outgoing information to a defined and minimal amount, so it's a step in the wrong/symantec direction for me.
