Kai apparently travels with a hatchet (and removed it from his pack) so he can craft crude lodging from underbrush and cut firewood for beachside bonfires appropriate for someone to play acoustic guitar beside.

Sorry, I am re-writing my own 20's via Kai and have merely deduced the foregoing from that one interview. It is a thing of beauty.
