This incarnation of Atari is Infogrames, which bought the Atari trademarks out of a previous bankruptcy. Infogrames hasn't been able to earn a dime of profit since 1999.

No, but I'm sure he can think of something hideous to do with one of their old-style controllers.

So what's the story on Atari? Did they just get lazy like Tandy/Radioshack? I'm sure I could google it but I'm hoping for a link to a definitive article to where it went wrong.

^ A little different than Radio Shack. Shorter story: after the video game crash in 1983, the company split in 1984. The "game " component was sold to keep the hardware component afloat. There was a bit of a rebound, and then in 1989 Nintendo happened.

Damn, then it was over for them before it got started good. About '86-'87 the 2 and 386 processors were coming out...things were really just getting going.

Atari has died almost as often as Superman, much to the same result. There's a good overview of the many deaths of Atari in Ars Technica today.

Whatever. Video games with relevant budgets are becoming more and more like films, it reads here and there. They're certainly becoming as predictable.

And what seems to be every console producer's dream nowadays is to let the box become a receiver for content delivery.

Big games with their pre-planned downloadable content dropped every few months or so to try to curb the marketing budget hole after launch just won't become more interesting all of a sudden.
They're mostly okay or average while looking good or better, as, just like in film, no one will deviate from what worked in the past that much. Innovation seems to be overrated a bit - the usual stuff sells or gets played everywhere.

You can't lump Atari in with that diatribe. Atari wrote the book on video games. More than that, they made the paper then wrote the pages.

Atari's died almost as many times as Da Burg.

Call it a diatribe or not, Bornyo; the entertainment industry has its own set of crazy nonsense going on and the video game sector's pretty popular.

Even if not everything's Call Of Duty, almost everything wants to be Call Of Duty. Or Gears Of War.


Somewhere I watched an interview with someone formerly very high up at Atari - he sold his share, left them, whatever. He was more or less embarrassed due to the shitty games they would put out then today and thought shitty games would attract a shitty image.

The Atari ST was the first computer gaming device I owned, I guess. Some good stuff on there. Mouse Trap was good.

It's not even 2019 Yet..

They released complete and utter electronic garbage like The 5200, 7800 and the Jaguar. If any a company deserved to die it was Atari. The 2600, classic square one button joystick will always be a iconic legend but the sad fact is the only other even halfway decent game console they came up with was the Lynx.

I'll still have fond memories of their 80's computers though, my dad had an XE and the ultra kvlt and underground....ATARI 800!!!

Atari's been out of the hardware market for quite some time now. They didn't survive the software market because they published absolute shit games like that horrid Alone In the Dark re-boot.
