What is a DPO?

I guess I could agree with your comment about a driving a Porsche with a ford alternator, but I'm driving a Porsche with Ford fuel injectors and Ford Ranger engine mounts (I'll be switching to Volvo mounts before long.) The motor mounts are there for money saving ($50 versus $600.) To an extent the injectors are as well, but injectors are injectors. Whether they come from a Porsche box or a Ford Racing box, they're essentially the same, and one is built by Bosch while the other is built by Ford under a Bosch license. Plus Porsche doesn't sell flow matched sets and Ford Racing does.

As for the alternator, the original Bosch was inadequate when it was new. Bosch claims 115amp output, but that's optimistic at best. It's more like 100, and it drops off rapidly as temps go up. It's very prone to overheating due to its old fashioned solid case design, and even requires special cooling ducts to draw in fresh air from the fender. The Contour used a Ford 3G 130 amp alternator which is actually a fairly sophisticated design. I only bought a junk yard alternator because no one had tried this solution and I wanted something cheap so I could test for fit. To buy a new version of this alternator costs about the same as a rebuilt Bosch. Switching to the Ford alt allows you to ditch the convoluted cooling ducts, get a slight bump in output, and hopefully more reliable operation in hot weather.
