Flipped on the tv this morning to CBS with a crawl about 27 dead in school shooting. I really hoped it was a documentary, or revisit of some previous incident. No such luck.

What to say? The shooter's Facebook is here. Nothing to really glean from it. A couple of normal pics. A video of his cat. No ranting or raving.

At the end of the day you just can't stop a lone wolf who doesn't expect to come home from the mission.

Not to inject politics, but credit to the President. A reporter asked Jake Carney if this would increase the push to ban assault weapons. Basically, the President's mouthpiece said this wasn't the time for posturing. Good for him.

Once upon a time I read some explanation of the Chinese attack phenomena but fuck if I can remember. Something about China being a society where the individual feels helpless and this helplessness exploding into rage. That doesn't address the issue of why school children are the targets of attacks in China.

@born I don't know if new laws will be passed. Anything is possible. I mean, there's a mulatto in the White House not serving coffee. There weren't many changes after Virginia Tech or Columbine. But logic tells me that the way we deal with the mentally ill is what the conversation needs to be about. I feel pretty confident this gomer is going to have a well documented history of wackiness.

I suspect the real issue here is mental illness. State public mental health systems tend to be an underfunded patchwork. On a Federal level, SAMHSA divides its focus between mental illness and substance abuse and many states follow suit. Although the two have some connection I never understood combining these two into single agencies. IMO it is indicative of an overall half-assed approach to both. I will be interested to see the future reportage of Adam Lanza's mental health issues. The usual bureaucratic mantra is to decry "gaps in services". OTOH the taxpayers don't want to pay to fill those gaps. And the cycle continues.

I feel terrible about this tragedy, but I knew it wouldn't be long before the gun control douchebags would come out of the woodwork trying to capitalize on it to push their political agenda like that big mouth anti Big Gulp mayor Bloomberg. The smoke hadn't even cleared before he started whining about gun control.

I pointed out that these spree shootings are more man-bites-dog stories and that a lot of the 'urban' shootings (and the 'urban' shootings happening in my lily white town) are connected to drug trade. "So you'd legalize meth? Hey kids! It's ok to do meth!" and he proceeded to tell me how prohibition stopped people from drinking. I think he actually has mental health issues. I could tell him the sky is blue and he'd just say it was yellow and start yelling.

The worst year for mass shootings in the USA was...drumroll please...1929. And back then automatic weapons were not widely available to the public - only soldiers and organized criminals had access to them. Arson, historically, has been the preferred tool of mass murderers.

IIRC Thompson marketed the Tommy Gun to farmers and rural mail carriers. Machine guns were legal until the National Firearma Act of 1934. They're still legal from a Class III dealer, as long as the gov gets their $300 per gun.
