Mayan apocalypse...yeah, yeah that's the ticket.

Once upon a time I read some explanation of the Chinese attack phenomena but fuck if I can remember. Something about China being a society where the individual feels helpless and this helplessness exploding into rage. That doesn't address the issue of why school children are the targets of attacks in China.
