Just googled about flipping the bird and the story that came up said giving someone the middle finger dates back to Ancient Greece and that the gesture was a way to insult someone by telling them they take it up the ass. I don't know about any oddball gestures over there, but I have heard guys making hissing sounds sometimes. It's something they do to girls, but I think they also hiss at guys that they hate.
