I made the mistake of being in NYC last weekend and my flight out on Monday got cancelled. I rode out the storm in a hotel in Hell's Kitchen and finally flew home Thursday.

From where I was, Monday was just a windy day with medium rain, power didn't go out. However, after that, almost everything in Mid-Town was closed, because most anyone who works there has to commute from somewhere else and all mass transit was down. Restaurant row on 46th was mostly open though, which was nice.

The ride to JFK through lower Manhattan was navigated through streets without power, cops directing traffic on some intersections. Trees were down everywhere in Queens.

I'd had a nice trip through the North Fork of L.I. wine country over the weekend. I've heard they might not have power in parts of L.I. for at least a week or two.

The disparity between the storms impact where I was and say, Staten Island, is striking. I've heard there are bodies washing ashore regularly now along the more populated sections. It's a shame, the gov't clearly advised evacuation for virtually all of those areas.

I'd guess there are. In Breezy Point they started to build some high rises in the 80's(?). They got the foundations in. From what I heard, when someone realized that there would be no low income, because there are like next to no busses out there and only a bridge connecting it to Brooklyn, they put the kibosh on it. I think they finally removed or filled in the foundations a few years ago.

Power was out here for 4-5 days, not quite sure you lose track of time. After 2 days, you quit hoping about electricity, somehow you feel lucky without flooding. just try to stay warm. Wait for lights, sit in darkness,sSleep away boredom, listen to radio, charge phones from car battery, go find open supermarket if you are lucky to have gas. then grab water, ice, scrounge barren shelves for batteries, pretzels, potato chips, snickers, apples, whatever won't spoil. it's surreal you don't know what to buy in survival mode. You start to feel like the zombies everybody is waiting for. Curfew from 7-7. Most roads pitch black. Down the street still without power.

Power came back on about 8AM.
