I don't even like country music, but I'm still pretty sure that's Waylon Jennings and not Merle Haggard.

Yeah that is Waylon, I think though that the lineup may be a little fluid for whatever reasons because in this version at Farmaid Glen Campbell is in for Kris Kristofferson

I do too. My only exposure to Cash, before the American recordings, was through my folks watching his tv show. I always thought his "act" was so phoney. The big hair, the drawl, the holding the guitar like a scattergun. But as an adult I'm able to see that he lived his "act", lived his art, in a more real way than any other modern performer. Hurt, both the song and video, is a perfect example. You can feel the pain in his voice of a junkie searching for redemption, which is the point Reznor was trying to get across when he wrote it. But you can also hear the pain of a man who knows he's living on borrowed time. Throw the video in, with the shell of the man he was physically, the shaking hands. At the end when he closes the piano and runs his hands across the wood covering the keys (whatever it's called), almost like one closing a casket but not quite being able to walk away yet. It's heartbreaking. When June stands on the landing of the stairs just looking at him, the concern and pain just laid out for the world to see. The whole package is just an incredible example of life and art colliding.

This popped up on my mp3 player a few days ago. I guess I'd heard it before, but hadn't payed much attention to it. It's been stuck in my head since.
Originally a Bob Marley song, but like Hurt, Cash makes it his.
Cash was unique. He could sing anything in any genre and it was natural.
It's hard to believe he's gone because it was always like he'd always been there, everywhere, present in everything.
The "Hurt" video is one of the most powerful videos/vignettes I've ever seen, especially in light of Cash's life. It was definitely his goodbye. June died months after that footage of her standing on the stairs and if you knew anything about J.C., you knew he'd be soon behind.

Probably the only Hendrix cover I've ever heard where the main problem wasn't getting the guitarist to sound like Hendrix but instead getting the rest of the band to sound like the Experience. And yes the lead singer is terrible.

That's what was so cool about when Rick Rubin got ahold of him. He knew he had a guy with an unbelievable body of work who had nothing to prove. He pushed his limits beyond even what JC knew he could do. And then he threw in the spirituals, which just oozes the sincerity of the True Believer.
Hurt is as real Sunday Morning Comin Down.
He lived them both. And recorded them at the moment he was living them. He was the definition of an artist.
When June died it was a pretty big surprise to me, as a fan. He'd basically been dying for the last 5 or so years. Then she just up and went. You knew it was over. And he kept working. A fucking artist.

That's funny because I was noticing the resemblance in one of the pics above. I can't explain other than it being personality, charisma, some unknown It factor. Between the character and interviews I've seen with her, the Weeds chick just strikes me as a cunt...in the most respectful way possible, of course. And just isn't attractive enough to get away with being a cunt. The few people who have seen pics of my whore ex SO are giggling right now.
I dunno. Individual taste, I guess.
