Teenagers have high metabolism. Teenage athletes have exceptionally high metabolism. How can 850 calories at lunch sustain even the non-athletes through several hours of afternoon classes? There is a correlation between brain function and calorie intake.
Those who have football, basketball, volleyball, etc. practice after school typically don't get to eat until at least 6:30 pm and cannot function properly through six hours of classes and physical exertion on 850 calories, of which only about 150 - 200 calories are carbs and protein.
It was never school lunches that made the fatties obese. It is what they consume after school and on weekends. The very light lunches will only mean that once they leave school, they will stuff their fat faces with even more junk food.
Those who aren't fat will only find themselves fatigued in class and at athletic practice.
