Black/slate 64gig iPhone 5. I said fuck it to waiting in line and decided to just show up at the Apple store in the downtown mall a half hour before the store opened. There was a HUGE line and the Apple chick at the end of the line said they were already sold out of the the model I wanted. I went and checked a couple of AT&T stores and heard the same thing, so I decided to drive out to the Best Buy store out by the military base.

The Best Buy showed no signs of any activity, so apparently they weren't opening early for the iPhone 5 release. While driving back out of the parking lot, I saw a little AT&T store with maybe 20 people in line outside and wound up getting the next to last 64gig black/slate model that they had. Everyone around me seemed to be getting the 16gig model.

I probably spent an hour or so out of my day shopping for it compared with some people who camped out under a tarp at the main AT&T store during the biggest overnight rainstorm that I've ever seen up here. I'm not sure about the hundreds of people waiting overnight to get into the mall to go to the Apple Store. I guess maybe they all slept in the parking garage? Suckers.

I used to refer to my iPhone as my FuturePhone™ since the original iPhone was so ahead if its time, but I've started calling this one the MonolithPhone™ as it resembles the black slab obelisk from 2001: A Space Odyssey. I guess that would make me one of the monkey men.

I hear nothing but abused bitch style bawling regarding the maps. It's not like you can't access google maps for directions if you really feel the need.

other than that how is it?. I'll probably grab one in the next month or so.

Maps are my most needed feature after camera and vid. I'm sticking with my 4S now with iOS 6. And the 4S is smaller. I hate stuff clogging up my purse or pockets.

Before this, I was using a 4S that I recently upgraded to iOS 6, so this basically operates like a much faster version of that phone. It does feel much thinner & lighter and the proportions immediately reminded me of the 2001 monolith, like I said. I immediately put mine in a case because I've heard stories of the aluminum body being easy to scuff or scratch. I'll keep it in the case until I hear whether or not that's actually true.

As far as the map issues go, I think the problem only occurs when you're using the gimmicky 3D overhead view. Building and structures look distorted and weird sometimes. But, if you use it just like the old Maps app, it should work fine. I watched the end of a baseball game this afternoon and was pleased to see that the MLB app now displays 16:9 fullscreen HD video on the new 4" screen.

They switched on 4G LTE service up here about a week before the iPhone 5 came out, so I've been able to use that to download purchased songs & apps all day. It's about as fast as a decent wifi connection, but drains the battery rapidly.

Oh, a couple more things...

The new screen looks weird if you view it while wearing polarized sunglasses. I haven't seen that reported elsewhere. It looks kind of dim and bluish, like I've heard can happen to a guy's vision if he OD's on Viagra. The old 4S screen looked just fine in a side-by-side comparison.

Also, I seem to make fewer spelling errors while texting with iOS 6. I'm not sure what they changed in the OS, but it seems less dumb now.

I don't feel too bad about spending a little cash in the fall. We're all about to get our dividend checks for living up here. It's down quite a bit from the peak amount of around $2K a few years back, but $878 is still a nice bit of change.
