Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, died Saturday, weeks after heart surgery and days after his 82nd birthday.
Armstrong commanded the Apollo 11 spacecraft that landed on the moon on July 20, 1969, and he radioed back to Earth the historic news of "one giant leap for mankind." He spent nearly three hours walking on the moon with fellow astronaut Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin.
Armstrong and hiw wife, Carol, married in 1999, made their home in the Cincinnati suburb of Indian Hill, but he had largely stayed out of public view in recent years.
He spoke at Ohio State University during a February event honoring fellow astronaut John Glenn and the 50th anniversary of Glenn becoming the first American to orbit the Earth. In May, Armstrong joined Gene Cernan, the last man to walk on the moon, at Pensacola Naval Air Station in Florida to support the opening of The National Flight Academy, which aims to teach math and science to kids through an aviation-oriented camp.
And we still haven't been back.

Of all the astronauts, it is great he was the first one to walk on the moon. He did the perfunctory touring after it happened, but then he kept to himself for nearly forty years and did not try to cash in on it.
Contrast that to Buzz Aldrin who is about the biggest astronaut whore out there. The Apollo astronauts did not like dealing with him during the program, they derisively called him "Dr. Rendezvous." He lobbied hard to be the first one out on the moon and that did not sit well with the other astronauts. Neil Armstrong was the archetype American hero, quietly doing his job well without basking in glory.

I actually have enjoyed the recent Buzz Aldrin attention whoring. Until today. I really find it distasteful today. It's an emotion that has kind of thrown me some.
Not getting political political, but Romney said something to the effect that the "moon has lost it's first son". It was poetic in it's simplicity. To me at least.
Isn't it amazing that in less than 75 years mankind went from first powered flight to putting a man on the moon...and getting him back safe. Even for a man, for the man, it was way beyond a small step.
We go to the moon not because it is easy, but because it is hard. Frightening how that spirit can die so quickly and with such finality.

We weren't trying to beat Russia to a Gameboy.
Also, even though Japan got the Gameboy, Russia trumped them by creating Tetris for it. Only way they could trump the moon landing is by putting guys on Mars.

The moon landing thing was not mediated to be a scientific achievement. All the flag-waving nonsense was in the way. I think I'm there with you. The scientific achievements were gravy. I think the question would be should it have been done without flag waving? And if so, how?

Nah, getting to the moon seems simple enough. Build something that won't burn up leaving and entering the atmosphere, stick it on top of a shit load of fuel and light a match.

The flag waving was about saying "fuck you" to every other country on the planet. This was at a time in the US when the country as a whole (blacks excluded) had a thing called dignity. You're familiar with dignity aren't you? Most humans are born with at least a little of it. But many use it as a means of exchange to get something they think they need more of(i.e. meth, smack, rims, etc.) Your mother sold the last vestiges of hers to your trick father for an extra $10 so he could fuck her without a rubber.
