It's hard to understand just how dangerous and ground breaking the George Jefferson character was at the time. In the early 70s black characters were usually pretty benign..."knew their station", I guess...or were criminals. George Jefferson was the counterpoint to Archie Bunker, who was hugely groundbreaking. George was a dirty secret of our society. A successful black businessman who was an unabashed racist. A very real character, not the buffoonish stereotypes like so many of the Norman Lear creations of the time.
