Last year the way the Dems were blocking the confirmations was to filibuster to block the cloture vote. They need 60 for the cloture, so it's easier to stop the process there. That's what they did. As much as I love you Toe....I hope you are wrong on that one.. The new head of the senate judiciary committee is Spector, who is a moderate from Pennsylvania. Bush lost that state but Spector won his seat anyway. Spector won't have to run again for a while, and he'll probably retire rather than run, but he'll be keenly aware that he can't follow Bush too closely and stay with his constituency. Spector is pro-abortion and I think he was part of the Republican group that quietly helped kill Bork. And he has already fired a warning salvo at Bush over not going too far on nominees. Soooo.... I'm not too worried about anything like Asscroft making it to the Supreme Court. Evidently he changed his tune a bit after Bush's comments today regarding his earning of political capital, and how he intends to spend it. Specter's words are as hollow as any other politician's. I don't see asscroft nominated for any number of reasons.
