The $650 doesn't go into my pocket. It's what my firm charges for my time. After the rent and staff are paid, I'm only keeping about $800,000. Then I pay the taxman. My firm is a California partnership, and as a partner I'm an owner which means I get to pay self-employment taxes (i.e., both parts of Medicare and Social Security) and California income tax on top of what the Federal government takes. All told it's nearly 60%. And I don't even live in California!
