ANTI-PORN GROUPS HAIL OBSCENITY BUST
CONSERVATIVE AMERICA -- Cultural conservatives are cheering the Extreme Associates federal obscenity prosecution (See “Extreme Associates Hit With Indictment,” X-Press, 8/8/03). Anti-pornography groups such as Morality in Media hailed the indictment as an encouraging sign after what the group criticized as an unofficial 10-year moratorium on obscenity prosecutions.
“We see it as what we hope is the proverbial first step in a journey of a thousand miles,” said Patrick McGrath, spokesman for Morality in Media. “We know that there are other cases in the works, and … we hope [this] is the first of many obscenity prosecutions.”
Capt. Vance Proctor of the LAPD said the porn industry had changed since the definition of obscenity was created in 1973 and it was time to do something about it.
“In the last 10 or 12 years, we’ve seen the films slowly degrade so far below what the Supreme Court has established,” he said. “If we don’t prosecute this, it’s just going to get worse.”
“The pornography industry is now on notice that the Justice Department is taking steps to enforce federal obscenity laws,” said U.S. Attorney Mary Beth Buchanan, who is prosecuting the case in Pennsylvania.
“This is not a case about limiting personal sexual conduct,” Buchanan said. “It is not a case about banning sexually explicit material. This is a case about a pornography producer who has violated federal law. Extreme Associates has engaged in criminal conduct by producing and distributing material that violates our contemporary community standards.”
Buchanan also said her office had received many complaints about Extreme Associates. One of its largest distributors is located in the Pittsburgh area, she said.
The store hasn’t been identified and its owners have not been charged, but Buchanan said they might be.
