Ever wonder why prostitution is illegal in the first place.

After generations of legal precedent and religious dogma it is now ingrained in our culture that prostitution is bad. But why?

Almost everything else I can think of sort of makes sense why it would be illegal (theft, murder, etc) and even stuff I don't necessarily agree with (smoking pot) you can at least understand the reasons why the law was made--even if you disagree with the reasons or think they are wrong.

What is the original basis for making sex for money illegal?

Why is it legal to get a blowjob for giving a girl a diamond ring, but illegal to get a blowjob for giving her money instead?

Why is it legal for a guy to pay a girl's rent in exchange for sex as long as the money is given to the landlord, but if the money if given to the girl (for her to give to the landlord) it becomes illegal?
