I'm fascinated by the Reagan assassination attempt. JFK was before my time, but I've been fascinated by it too. When I was in Grade 3 my folks gave me the little metal change box with the local newspapers from those days in November '63. But the Reagan thing, I remember where I was, I remember watching it all day. It was my JFK moment.

So anyhoo, I'm sitting on the bed smoking a bowl and watching this JFK assassination doc on the Military Channel. Followed by a doc on the Reagan attempt. Woohoo. I'm in hog heaven.

And so I start wondering. Why have their been so many conspiracy theories about JFK, but really none about the Reagan attempt.

Because the Reagan whacko was more easily investigated. The JFK whacko, not so much. Plus...Reagan survived while Kennedy flung brains all over his wife and the Governor of Texas.

Jailbait motivated criminal. It should at least be a Lifetime Network Movie of the Week.

Last year was like the 30th anniversary, so there were lots of new docs. On one they played the tapes Foster made of Hinkley calling her. I had no idea they actually spoke. Funny stuff in a vacuum, but chilling put into the perspective of where it all ended.

I disagree on Oswald not being easily investigated. Defected to the Sov, came back, his antics in New Orleans, going to the Cuban embassy in Mexico City. He wasn't under heavy surveillance by any means, but he had more government attention paid to him than the average you or me.

Hinkley pretty much came from out of nowhere, Federal law enforcement- wise. It didn't take more than a couple of hours for the press to have a fairly basic dossier on him, but information moved a lot faster in 82 than in 63.

I think that Oswald's background fostered a lot of the theories. On the surface an All American Boy, but the Commie leanings gave him a bit of a shadowy feel. He HAD to be being run by someone, no?

Hinkley was a life long kook and that was pretty well documented. But so were Sirhan and Arthur Beamer, and there are plenty of theories about them.

I do think Reagan living fits in the equation. Wallace survived too, and there are only a few theories about that hit.

That's my main point. Well, that and that Reagan survived. I can't argue with anything else you said, though. I do think Oswald was just an idiot, along the lines of Hinkley. I don't think it went much deeper than that.

Didn't Hinkley shoot Reagan up close while Kennedy was shot at a distance. A stealthy sniper killing at a distance has alot more romanticism than a kook bursting out of the crowd with a gun and aiming poorly.

From what I understand Brady got treated like shit for doing his job and getting hurt after everything died down but I may be misinformed. We got the Brady Bill but that just ended up limiting the 2nd amendment rights of the general public.

I got a notice in the mail from the county that my concealed carry permit is up for renewal.

Brady was treated with the best medical care offered by the US Government except for the handful of surgeons who were attending Reagan at the time. The Brady Bill was seriously misguided out of self-interest and a wife that wanted her husband back in full measure. No law is going to prevent a Hinkley shooting. He popped 'em with a .22 as I recall, which just rattles around inside your body and tears stuff up.

An up close shooting also makes for more eyewitnesses and easier apprehension of the shooter than a sniper does. There has never been any documented witnesses that actually saw Oswald pull the trigger. There were a shitload that saw Hinckley. Kind of hard to make a conspiracy out of the obvious.

I don't know which movie it came from, but you're basically quoting something we both must have seen once where a mobster was talking about popping someone in the head with a .22 rather than a larger gun. A larger gun would make a mess, but a .22 will just rattle around and scramble the brain.

On topic: I can't find a link, but I have read where the kooks figure JFK and Reagan shootings were both coups orchestrated by moneyed Texicans. Hinckley being the mental son of a large GHWB donor was the throw away Manchurian Candidate, as some claimed Sirhan was. If given the choice, I think I'd rather be a Manchurian Candidate than a straight patsy, like Oswald or the guy that was jailed for killing Vicki Morgan. One of the few things they don't blame on the Jews.

I knew a fat bitch (unfortunately named Coral) who lived next to Hendry Hill in Seattle when he was still in the witness protection program. I believe I mentioned it before a long time ago. In my local paper, on the 23rd, there was a small blurb within the bigger article that someone did see the rifle barrel sticking out the window and assumed it was Secret Service.

A bunch of people say Sirhan pull the trigger. Rosie Grier and some other jock whose name escapes me took him down. Tons of theories out there about that hit. Ditto with Bremer.

When they slow it down, you can see the gun firing in the Reagan job, and a couple of seconds later you can see him in the scrum of cops and Secret Service guys. But you never see him with the gun in hand.

Oswald had a lot of time between the shooting and the actual capture. He was seen in the breakroom at Texas Book, then possibly photographed leaving the building, next seen taking down the Dallas cop, then his rooming house, then the theatre. And there was "no way" the timeline could've worked. Which is all bullshit, because it not only assumes everyone is on synchronized watches, but it relies on eyewitness reports, which are notoriously inaccurate.

I think Brady remained in the Press Secretary post until at least the end of the first term.
