My fave is the "better things to do" angle. There's serial killers running around the cops should be hunting. I'm sorry, but an idiot drops a crime, which it still is in most locales, in the lap of the cops, it's just dereliction to ignore it. Sure, it's stupid that it's illegal, but it is what it is.
