Grohl is a machine as far as work goes. Side projects, putting in work on other folk's projects. I think he's pretty talented, but he puts out so much content that at some of it has to be darned good. What's the saying about throwing shit on a wall?
Did you see the doc about the recording of St. Anger? The shrink, team coach, whatever the fuck he was, completely took over the creative process. Sure, the machine was very obviously broken, but to throw out the dynamics of how the machine functions and replace it with psychobabble was a recipe to a truly shitty creation. Altho, I really liked the title track. It had a "Battery" feel to it. But the rest of it? Garbage in, garbage out.
I honestly like the post- Master of Puppets stuff, except St. Anger. But I like it in a different way than Ride the Lightning, which I like in a different way than Kill 'em All. They're the Led Zeppelin or Deep Purple of this generation. A tangent within a frame. Their albums are all very different bodies of work, but there's an underlying continuity, a certain I don't know what, that ties them all together.
