I'm not used to such a small gun, and it showed last Saturday. I was shooting it outdoors and the slide took a substantial chunk out of my left thumb just behind the nail. Imagine a hangnail that becomes a divot and you'll get an idea of the unpleasantness.

An injury like this wouldn't happen to a new gun owner, but I got lazy while shooting. I was trying to show my .45 carrying friends what the .380 could do at about 20 yds so I decided to brace with my left hand for accuracy and I left my thumb kinda dangling out there because there is no good place to put it on a gun so small.

Edit: BTW, that's not my hand or my image in that photo. i just hotlinked an image I found on google. So if anyone is spending money to digitally enhance the fingerprints in that photo you will be sorely disappointed.

I like the Ruger LCP better. Very accurate and dependable.

Could be worse. They had an episode of MythBusters where they proved it was possible to blow your own thumb off by improperly holding a high-powered handgun. I can't remember which gun they used, but it was something really powerful like a Casull .454.

I hurt my hand/wrist shooting a Keltec P3AT a few years back. Its a .380 that is really small and I have large hands. They sell a lanyard for it so you can wear it around your neck if you wanted. It holds 6 rounds plus 1 in the pipe.

I've shot the Ruger LCP and the Kel-Tec. The Ruger is okay but in my opinion the S&W I have is better balanced and has the heft it needs to make it comfortable to shoot, and accurate. A friend has the Kel-Tec. I can shoot it very accurately but I handed it back to him after one clip and don't care if I never shoot one again. It's just too damned small and the thought of shooting a hundred rounds through it at a range is a turnoff. I understand that in a defensive situation it doesn't go beyond the first clip but I just do not want a gun that I don't enjoy shooting.

Kel-Tec makes a good gun but unless you weigh 300lbs and have hams for hands you will not have the hand control/inertia/mass in your extremity to control this gun. I could make a gun that size that shot a 12 ga. buckshot shell but you wouldn't want to shoot it.
