I knew he wouldn't live long after losing his job, and that was before it came out he had cancer. We already have a thread you can bash him in, if you like. Give him a thread and a day for people to miss him.

Great coach in his prime, but stayed around too long.

Can you imagine how it would be to be hounded the way he was (rightly or wrongly) and knowing that you were on borrowed time to begin with?

Yeah, I was only mildly surprised when I heard. I'm a Penn State grad, but I was fairly indifferent. Joe left the job become his life & it defined him instead of the other way around (like it should be).....so I'm sure growing older with his wife wasn't enough for him to keep that will to live. Admittedly he was a legendary coach, & it's sad that he went out the way he did, but in a lot of ways he has nobody else to thank but himself. You can't sit upon a pedestal for as long as he did, & not expect to be held to a much higher standard. I don't think anyone could argue that, friend or not, he had a moral obligation to report what he was informed of to the authorities.....he failed to do that & when the coverup died, he got burned for it. It's sad, but he's responsible for it through his own inaction.
Just the same, I believe JoePa was a decent guy who made a serious mistake in judgement. His athletes actually graduated (I believe it was like 86%), he did a lot for the community, donated a small fortune to the University, etc. I think history will be kind to him in the end. Barring Bowden coming out of retirement, I don't think his wins record will ever be matched either......people just don't stay in it that long anymore. Hell Joe was the coach for 49 years....62 including as an assistant. Hell my mom was 12 when he started at Penn State. Little known fact, the only NFL job he said he'd ever have to consider if it were offered (it never was....though there were other offers) was none other than that of my Pittsburgh Steelers.
Anyway, RIP Joe!

On SI.com today, in his Monday Morning QB column, Peter king talks about JoPa's 3 flirtations with NFL jobs. First he was offered the Steeler's job, which eventually went to Chuck Noll, but turned it down because he was only 3 years in as HC at Penn State and felt he owed them more. He was making 20k and the Steelers offer he turned down was 70K. Then he was courted 2x by the Patriots in the early 70's and early 80's. First time he came to a verbal agreement that he withdrew from, citing shaky ownership. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2012/wr...p;sct=hp_t11_a2

I saw the headline from someone's NY Post while I was on the 6 train. Oh well, some guy died because his dumb jock shit was more important than his colleague molesting a bunch of kids. Yep, EXACTLY! Though I didn't attend main campus because they didn't offer my program there....I spent a lot of time in State College. It's like literally in the middle of a cow pasture. So, you can bet Joe knew a lot about what Jerry was up to (not just the 1 incident that he got fired over).....it's basically a small town environment & you know EVERYONE knows EVERYTHING about EVERYONE in that setting. Joe cared more about protecting the image of the football program.....and ironically it's image is tarnished even more because of it. The truth always has a way of coming out....and how many more boys were victimized because of it? Penn State handled Jerry just like the Catholic Church does priests.....they barred him from the football facilities at main campus.....BUT allowed him to hold football camps with boys at satellite campuses. When will they learn? When you do the right thing & tackle things head on, things usually always end up better for you in the end.....certainly would have for any future victims that suffered because football IS/was king at Penn State.

I did remember the Pats offers though. I read somewhere that the Steelers job was the only one that was really tempting though.

Gia, you really shouldn't comment on things that you don't understand. You've completely misstated the situation and made yourself look like an ass to those of us who are far better informed about this matter. I like you and am trying to be polite about a matter that is very sensitive for me. If you were someone else, I'd probably tell you to shut your fucking cum-filled whore mouth, you stupid cunt. But as I said, I like you and won't take the low road because of it.
