I downloaded and watched a torrent of that episode of Intervention. Christina is doomed to a hard life, being bipolar AND a drug addict. Also, it doesn't look like she knows how to make good choices -- how could she, with that family? -- as the deadbeat dad who sired her child, shown in Intervention with his face obscured, looks to be one of those winners with neck and scalp tattoos.

That man has tattoos all over his neck and head, and STILL was found to be a better parent than Christina. That's how fucked up she was.

She looked fatter but, all in all, much healthier at the end of the episode. I hope things go well for her.

Places around that weren't head shops that sold whippits didn't keep them out in the open. You had to ask for them. The gourmet kitchen supply places is where to look. If they sell the whip cream dispenser then they probably sell the whippits. Places around here asked for ID and store policy was they wouldn't sell the to anyone under 21.

One that I can share is a family I visited while doing social work that had a man dying in bed [the father] and a mom that was fucking bonkers. She was dipping snuff running around begging for money and help. I couldn't get anyone to come see the man or get any medical help and he died over the July the 4th weekend. Their kids were filthy and there was shit [actual human excrement in the corners of the rooms where they lived. The smell from the apartment was so bad I was the only SW that would enter their living quarters. They had a young girl [about 11 if I remember ] that was being pimped out by a neighbor. The woman wound up in a mental institution and the kids in foster care. Just another day in the Appalachian coal fields ! There were of course all kind of hairy shit that went on with the juvies and their families but discretion is the better part of valor.

Alex Jones is beyond nuts. However, I share the general notion of his that the foster care system's an absolute joke and doesn't protect who they claim to protect. In the case above, it might have been the better situation for the kids, but they probably will continue to suffer from their surroundings. If kids don't have parents with enough time and empathy to invest in them, they're basically fucked for life and generally nothing will change that.

As far as the discretion goes you may be right in general but I just simply am uncomfortable talking about the misery of others. Comes from having actually known and worked with them I suppose. The story I told is my gold standard for getting people to leave me the fuck alone about it. I have worse trust me. As far as foster care goes it's a hit or miss scenario. There are those that do it just for the check and there are those that genuinely care about children. There is a terrible shortage of foster care in the USA. I can't honestly tell you what happened to the kids in my story but I can guarantee you they had a tough road. I'm sure the mom is dead by now. One of the training films I watched very early in my career was one called "child of rage" [I believe that's the name it was over 30 years ago.] It was about a little girl in Ky. that was raped as an INFANT ! She was adopted later and began to exhibit homicidal tendencies at a very early age. Maybe around 6 or 7 if I remember correctly. She started by hurting the family pets and was caught with a knife headed to her adoptive mom and dad's bedroom to kill them. She wound up in one of the few "therapeutic" foster homes and was seen later just beginning to learn why what she did was wrong and how to have empathy for others. Very dramatic film and one I will always remember.
As for the latter, some kids do make it regardless and in spite of their families. I have a couple of kids I worked with on my facebook now and while their lives haven't been perfect they are making it. There was one that used to call every Christmas and wish me merry merry. He had come from an alcoholic family and was the family scapegoat. Negative attention is better than none right ? We had some to commit murder after treatment and some that were suicides. Some that committed murder before treatment and some that would have been better off if they had committed suicide. At one time the facility I worked at was considered the best in the state and was highly regarded. I don't know about now but I'm very proud to have been a part of it.

And yes , human suffering certainly isn't limited to any particular region but it does vary from place to place in interesting ways.
