I wish I'd known about Hitchens sooner. I'd peruse his less political articles in Vanity Fair, but I didn't know much about him until my friend, Veronique Vega, announced one night at dinner years ago, turning me onto God Is Not Great, "He's very you." Now, I come home from a late night out and discover Hitchens' R.I.P. via Twitter. Yes, my first and last days of Christopher Hitchens appreciation was from an erstwhile porn star then later the bane of social fucking networking. And that, he would've appreciated.

That's too bad. The story ended the way everyone knew it would. Hitchens was one of my favorite drunken belligerent pundits. I guess he knows now whether there's a God or not.

He took on Mother Teresa, Bush I, Bush II, Clinton, Lady Di, the Greek Junta, the Turks, and everyone in between. Plus, he defended
Rushdie when everyone got whingey and weak-kneed.

I think his heavy drinking was a drag on his later writing but he knew how to turn a phrase.
