Elks

They're fraternal community service organizations. Masons without the world domination. My dad was in all of them, but was most active in the Lions. They help out folks who can't afford them with glasses. They also raise money for vision related stuff.

they also enjoy cheap drinks and dinners. cheap as in not expensive....that's not a shot at the clubbers. they do good work and mean well.

I think the Elks big thing is giving away college scholarships. The Lions do the glasses and also sell straw brooms around here.

The Masons, through their appendant body the Shriners, run all the burn and childrens hospitals you see them associated with- without ever billing a patient. All of them to an extent are charitable organizations. Now, what the Loyal Order of Moose do- I have no idea.

Most of the BPOE are heavy drinkers. I worked as a bartender at an Elks lodge one summer and raked in a hundred bucks in tips every night. But they are also hard workers.

One night, a 60-year-old man and 3 friends sat down and polished off a bottle of Black Velvet. I woke up the next morning at 6 a.m. for a morning run and saw the guy hanging off the business end of a John Deere combine. He recognized me and made a point to say good morning.

My dad's Lion thing used to do 2 or 3 prime rib dinners a year. Melt in your mouth and rare. Got to travel all over the northwest and western Canada for conventions when I was a kid.
