So I was sitting on a very comfortable bar stool with my legs/feet wrapped around the metal bar parts. Someone got my attention and as I was standing up to talk with them I collapsed.

My right foot had fallen asleep.

I got right back up and kept walking but my right foot hurts like crazy.

Since when your foot is asleep you don't really know what position it is in so it's likely I stepped on it in a really awkward way.

From my research if you break a bone in your foot the general advice is to tape it up. Have any of you folks done this before?

The part that hurts is the edge of my foot, think from your little toe down to your heel.

I can go see a doctor for free here in Canada but from my research he is likely to tell me to tape it up tight for the next few weeks.

Any advice would be appreciated, it hurts but not so much that I can't walk.

And when I say tape it up I mean that as an option instead of using a cast.

If it is just in the foot, they may do a walking cast, so no crutches or any thing. And probably only like 2 three weeks. Elevation, advil, etc. You really just gotta make sure it is immobilized, because you don't wanna keep prying open the crack every time you take a step. 3 advil minimum, if you don't have access to the good stuff, or can't function at work with the good stuff.

I broke a bone in my big toe a while ago, it was a fucking bitch for about 4 days. Then about a month or so before it was right. No tape, no dr, just advil when I had to work and a pair of boots with the sole worn out all fucked up because I was walking on the outside of my foot for a month favoring the big toe.

If you start seeing color change or the pain worsens, then hit the Dr.

Elevate it and take some ibuprofen tonight. Ice would also be helpful. If it's badly swollen tommorow then ice and ibuprofen and since the Doc/Er is free then go see him as soon as you can get your foot in a shoe. He won't be able to do anything other than what you described but he will be able to prescribe you better anti-inflammatories.

Edit: I agree with Jerkules- we said basically the same thing but he has more recent experience apparently.

I broke my foot when I was a kid in three place. I didn't go to the doctor for about 3 days because my dad was a cheap fuck and wanted to wait to see if it was just sprung and felt better. Ended up getting a regular hard cast. This post is probably pretty fucking worthless actually, sorry.

Stay off it as much as possible, keep it elevated, and wrapped up tight. Also use drugs, good drugs.

Thanks guys. My foot is all squashed up in an ACE style compression bandage with the little hooks holding it in place. I am limping around but I am relatively sure I didn't break anything. Or rather I think it would probably hurt a lot more if I had.

Advice: Do not try to stand up if your foot is asleep, you won't know what position it is in and you might do what I did which was basically make some kind of unintentional ballet move. And I am also glad I didn't buy drugs from the black guy who mumbled whatever he said that made me get off my bar stool.

Thanks for the advice especially Hav. I'm compressed and elevated and the most walking I will need to do for the rest of the day is to the bathroom. If I could build a dream house it would have secret passages in it and i would also have a urinal in my bedroom and in my living room.

Some people say that XPT is populated by terrible scumfuck assholes but I have proven time and again with questions and hamster pictures that most of you are humans.

EDIT:@Hav and Jerk: I can't take pain relievers, advil included. First off I am a drunk (surprise) and tylenol FUCKS your liver badly if you are a drunk and NSAIDS like advil and alieve interact with my lithium and can cause a toxic spike in lithium blood serum levels. I can get codeine over the counter here but I am not sure if I am allergic to it or what because it makes my whole body itch. So as far as taking drugs or even "good drugs" I am gonna have to pass on them and just grin and bear it. I have been through way worse pain than this. If it continues to be an issue tomorrow (or becomes worse/more serious) I will limp my way into a clinic and ask about an X-ray or whatever. Pretty much I never take pain meds. Last time I did was in the ER a few years ago, they gave me a morphine drip and that was fine but they prescribed me a bottle of codeine which I just could not use.

I'll tell my ER story sometime. I thought I was going to die, I was puking blood. And what was really going on which I neglected to mention was that I went to the ER because I was too wickedly hung over to think I could possibly survive.

I've seen worse reactions from codeine. A girl in my high school chemistry class had it prescribed to her for ulcers or something like that. One day she got up in the middle of class and went to get a drink of water out of the pencil sharpener screwed onto the teacher's desk.
