why does it often seem as though it has to be religion for people to just move on with their lives.
Because in the case of Christianity as they've interpreted it, it completely washes away their past choices and mistakes.
You can run but you can't hide.
These people choose Christianity because they believe it washes away the stains of their sins, at least officially. But most probably choose it because it offers them another target, other than themselves, to blame for their self perceived bad behavior.
