The only way to stop the uploaders/downloaders is to make the media less friendly. In other words, use DRM or similar in a closed ecosystem. Guess what? Apple introduced iCloud, and Google has their new music service out in Beta. These new cloud distributions not only can stream your own collection to your handheld devices, but iCloud pretty much did away with it's own closed ecosystem, and can provide a better copy of your non-iTunes media. So DRM may have bit the dust.

That is one answer to streamable music media that Pandora as well as others have cornered via internet radio. The future of media is tied into the convergence of portable devices, home media servers,"net top" devices, and now Smart Television displays. Most of these devices rely on codecs to play most media that is available. WMD Live can play back almost any media out there for around $150.00. That means a tech savvy person can rip a rented DVD into an .mkv file via software like Handbrake, store it into a hard drive, and play it back at will. Who cares of there are no previews? They are cut out of them anyway.

Then there is Netflix. For 8 bucks a month, you have content at your disposal, albeit limited. Try and shoehorn a porn economic model into that for 8 bucks a month.

If you can store it on a hard drive, then your content is wide open. There is no real viable way to stop the "Black Market" distribution of digital media. You simply do not have the cash to do it. For every network taken down, there are 3 others that pop up. Taking down Napster didn't stop them. Taking down Kazaa didn't either. It's a Global fight, and every Industry from software to media haven't set any clear battle lines yet because there aren't any.

My guess it they will have to adapt to the paradigm shift of new media and the devices that facilitate it.
