LOS ANGELES (KTLA) -- "Columbo" star Peter Falk has died at the age of 83.

Family members tell KNX-1070 that Falk died Thursday night at his home in Beverly Hills. They declined to discuss the cause of death.

The actor had been suffering from dementia and Alzheimer's disease, according to his adopted daughter, Catherine Falk.

In 2009, a judge established a conservatorship for the ailing actor after a court battle between Catherine and wife of more than 30 years, Shera Falk.

Falk won four Emmys for his starring role in the television detective series, "Columbo." He also received Academy Award nominations for movies in 1959 and 1960.

That's a damn shame.

The shame for me was the dementia. My step-grandmother has it and it's really getting bad. The body is alive, but she's long vacated it.

At least for him, maybe now the mind can reunite with the body in some spiritual plane ...

Columbo is infinitely rewatchable -- well the ones made for the 1970s NBC Mystery Movie wheel. I am less fond of the 1980-1990s ABC version. The original pilot Prescription Murder (1968) shows a youthful Peter Falk as a much harder edged Columbo than appeared in the regular series matching wits against Gene Barry. It took like two or three years for Columbo to be a regular series after the pilot. That would never happen in television today. I haven't seen it in syndication for a couple of years, but I am sure it will be back sometime-- maybe on your beloved Antenna TV Fatty -- as it is a perennially syndicated show like Hogan's Heroes or The Brady Bunch

If you get a chance watch an old B&W movie called Murder Inc. Falk gives a very good performance as Abe "Kid Twist" Reles.

Falk was a damn good actor, but that had to be one hell of a performance, because he looks nothing like kid twist.

IIRC, he got an Oscar nom for that role.

I remember it running on A&E some years back. My sister used to watch it religiously.

I'm a bit shocked it's not on ANYWHERE with all the channels that are on.

^^^^ I think they do the old TV series in leaps and starts now so it's not saturating the air waves constantly and that also raises rating because it hasn't been on in a while. I bet it will start being aired now, though.

I just checked IMDB to confirm. And, he did get the nomination for that role.

He got another for a role in "Pocketful of Miracles", which I don't think I've ever seen. Not much of a Capra fan anyway ...
