Been there. I feel for you, guy, I really do. They just don't live long enough. I'd give everything I have to have had another year with any I've shared my life with. The dirtiest secret I carry is that my dog means more to me than any other living thing.

Years ago on Gordon Liddy's show, a caller asked if dogs went to Heaven. His said with great conviction they they have no souls, so they don't. I just don't see how it would be Heaven.

From what I've seen with labs, they need lots of exercise. You gotta take em out, run em, tire them out, other wise they get all Carmella Bing. If you keep em in the house, only let them out to go to the bathroom, they'll eat anything that doesn't say NO. Good natured, friendly dogs though.

Thanks everyone. He was about seven, and had a lot of life left. He climbed or jumped into a neighbors above ground pool and couldn't get back out, so he drowned. Terrible way for a water loving dog to go.

I'll wait at least a year then decide if I want to go through this again.

I love the sympathy here. A dead pet is all condolences...dead whores, rapes or miscarriages get met with scorn and insults. Its why I can't bring myself to leave here voluntarily.

I know it's a fucked up way of thinking but my pet is worth more than those things. Plain and simple.

My dog doesn't talk shit about me behind my back. My dog doesn't kick me when I'm down. No matter the atrocious shit I do, no matter how deep the pit of despair is, no matter how paralyzed I am by my fears or my dashed hopes, my dog loves me. I can't say that about any human. He is the only thing I like about me. For that, I owe him the best life I can give him.

The sympathy comes from that, or something close to it.

sorry about your loss bornyo. that's a sad story and we lost our last lab at 7 yrs old too. same as you it was a sudden loss and it fucken hurt. it's way too soon for a dog of that quality to go.

This is it exactly. I've posted about it here before. The Bible tells us Christ has Agape Love for us sinners. The only real illustration of Agape Love we can understand here on earth is the love a good dog has for it's "owner". I'm not talking about some teacup dog hauled in a purse that snaps at people or some poor animal chained to a tree. I'm talking about a dog/human relationship that is balanced along the lines of the "Dog Whisperer". There is nothing like that unconditional love. And trust. Even Charin is living this in his gagfactor camper tours of America's serial killer breeding grounds.

I think it transcends human relationships because on the dog's side, there is never an ulterior motive and on our side, as the saying goes: "Dear God help me be half the man my dog thinks I am".

And as further example of the depth of the loss- for the past few years I've hit XPT and run, not really invested. And here tonight I find myself invested enough to camp on the board waiting for a sympathetic response. And that's only because the big fat mess of a Lab who I spent untold time and money with isn't lying right next to me right this minute releasing fleas into my Mom's basement regardless of how much I spent on Heartguard and Frontline. He'd fall asleep snoring with his head on my foot and snore like hell, and I'd probably be reading Deadspin right now.

I'd stand up, he'd snort, look up at me and I'd tell him to be cool and his head would hit the floor and he'd go right back to chasing ducks in his dreams.

It's not that I don't care about people, but that a few dogs have cared a lot more about me, and I can appreciate that.

It's going to take awhile. Pets feel indebted to us. We feed them, play with them, hug them, it's more than a friendship. It's beyond anything a human to human relationship is or understand.

It's why I don't care for most people. Most people don't understand we don't constantly want shit in our lives and ruin days.

I know for me that my house is never emptier than in the aftermath of what going through. Hell, my life is never emptier. Even when he's not right there with me, just the fact I know he's around...I can't really put it into words.

I lost my 17 year old lab on a New Years Eve day. On the 2nd I was at the shelter. I don't know why. Had no intention of coming home with a dog. Met a sad eyed pitbull who had been used as "bait" by the local Indians dogfighting club or whatever. Deep scars on his neck and head. He'd been there 3 months and it was his second time there. First after being rescued from the Indians, then found abandoned after being adopted. They told me no one had shown any interest in him and he'd kind of become the shelter mascot. That was it. Filled out the paper, the shelter director herself did a home visit the next day. I went and picked him up that night. I guess my point is that sometimes fate takes a hand. You said you want to wait a year, same plan as mine. But he needed a human. He was a mascot, but he still lived in a cage. He needed a real home. I had one. And I needed a dog. Fate stepped in. Part of me felt I wasn't mourning my lab properly. But this dog needed someone. And it was the right decision. I mourn my lab, and every other dog (or cat for that matter) I've lost every day. And I've given a sad, scared, lonely abused dog a safe, loving and comfortable life.

OK, I'm rambling and crying. Done now.

I know I still find myself calling out Clyde's name from time to time and still somehow expect to hear his plodding footsteps to come and be petted.

We're a strange group.

I'm very, very, very sad now.

All of this now has me thinking about ALL the pets I've lost. I'm now locked on my first cat, Friskies Buffet lost in 1974 whom my brother and I shared.

The songs I made up and used to sing to her are chiming in my head.

Losing most cats is like losing a goldfish to me.

If you die alone with a cat it will start eating you 15 minutes after you die. A dog will at least wait till its starving and you stopped smelling like their person.

Me too. In the course of my day today I drove past where my dad worked. Didn't think about it until I was right even with it. It suddenly smacked me in the head that it was the place where all of my family's pets were buried for a span of the 45+ years my dad worked there.

Yeah he was, and as much as it hurt, I already know there will be another. His damned fleas are still biting me when I go up to the shop and I'm already wondering what personality the next will have. Whatever path that takes I'm sure it will end up in my heart being broken again.

Circle of life. It's the price we pay to open our homes. A pretty big price, but worth it when you consider the alternative.

Pets are family members in my opinion, a family member that won’t bitch at you, or ask you for money because the light bill got cut off. I’m still not over losing my German Sheppard she was always at the door to greet me after a shitty day.

Like others have said on here it’s going to take time but I know you will open your heart to other puppy. Hang in their brother!

He was a beautiful dog and I'm sure he was a terrific friend. It's hard to let go especially when the parting is so unexpected. Only time is going to help, at least that is the way it is with me.
