If that theory is right then a fairly simple change to the Mozilla might fix it by not sending referrer information cross-site.

While the change would be simple, figuring out where to put it is not. Mozilla is enormous. The best bet is to figure out enough details to do a Google search see if someone has already done it or if there is a plugin that can do it.
