iPad: Tube8.com for example is very nicely optimized for it. Most porn sites wouldn't need apps, just a decent HTML5 web site.
As for newspapers -- what killed them above all was Craig's List. Newspapers got a disproportionate amount of their revenue from classified ads, and Craig's List eliminated that revenue stream overnight. For display ads, the Internet as a whole provided display-ad advertisers with many additional places to advertise, most way cheaper than newspapers. And it also provided people with limitless free news. The combination of all of the above has been lethal.
The iPad may help but only big marquee names like the NY Times, WSJ, etc. Most small/regional papers are doomed. Even the Times needed Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim to bail them out.
