The adblock extension is amazing--you can add wildcards (*banner, *advertisement, *counter, etc) and block more ads than you see.
tabbrowser extensions is good for forcing everything to stay in one instance of the browser, preferential is good once you get a feel for things and want to speed things up by increasing #of http servers and enabling pipelining.
jrv-can't you just edit the user agent text that identifies what browser you're using?
