I was specifically told

"We need to nip these false rumors in the bud. You may want to inform the board that false rumors will not be tolerated here."

This was a follow-up to a note in which I was told to ban someone for a Monkey-style rumor (ban since rescinded). So I think I'm on firm ground following policy handed down from Above. For various reasons the "inform" part never happened (I thought Tony should do it, and then I just forgot). We'll see about that this week.

(this doesn’t mean every rumor of course, but rather ones aimed at specific people likely to be very harmful in the wrong context)

Arguably hijacking this thread shouldn’t be a big deal. Hijacking Cailey Taylor's thread was more of a problem.
