Even tube sites offering stuff for free using DMCA as a safe harbor need some sort of business plan as they are Very expensive to maintain...I know this first hand.
Disclaimer: I'm not saying I am not part of the problem, I like tube sites and I used to like the big bookstore near me but I would buy cheaper online when I found stuff I liked. Now the building is vacant and I kinda miss it.
