It's what they do. Look at the Arizona shootings. Wall to wall coverage about the state of discourse, EVEN after it became quite clear the shooter was an unstable lone nut stalker. They have to convince us that they know better than the other news channel because please, God, they don't want you to turn the channel. Are they purposely lying? Who knows? Maybe a little yes, maybe a little no. I think it's really just about getting the most information out there before a competitor does the same. Whether the info is accurate or not, well, who'll remember that in a week?

I despise Cronkite for the American hating leftist he showed himself to be, but he was the Most Trusted Man in America for a reason. I think a major reason was that network news, at that time, didn't have to make a profit. And they didn't have 24/ 7 of time to fill. Those 2 changes to the network news model have left us with a very substandard news distribution system.

When I think of CNN covering a "breaking story", I always remember the deer in the headlights look of the blow dried pretty boy anchor handling the plane that the CIA shot down off Long Island when he took an unvetted call from an "eyewitness" who was pretty positive that Howard Stern's penis had brought down the plane. This douche, this ex weatherman from the WB affiliate in Normam, OK just sat there. Staring at the camera. Frozen. How do you take them seriously after that? They are what they are. They read copy. Not news.
