I don't remember when it was, but a few years ago this pipe smoking forum I was on (God the internet has so improved productivity...no one wastes any time anymore) either had a program or a member had a program where they were taking donations of pipes to give to homeless guys in LA, I think. The pictures were beyond priceless.

I think the reason for the smell difference is that pipe tobacco is has flavorings added. Saw something on the History Channel about an outfit that makes pipe tobacco and the guy was saying that what they shoot for is a good flavor for the smoker and a good "nose" for the other people in the room. Cigars, with the exception of flavored or infused, are just tobacco. Probably the same reason cigarettes smell different. The paper, the chemicals, the floor sweepings. All that adds to the fragrance.
