I've done all kinds of cross country driving. In the late 90's, I took a BMW from Anchorage, Alaska to Seattle, then to New York, down to Florida, back across to California, and back up to Seattle. I would never take a car that small on a roadtrip again. If you're in the driver's seat of a small car for more than 5-6 hours, expect a giant knot to form in the upper right part of your back. Bring a larger car than a Cayman. And get one of those refigerated coolers that you can plug into a cigarette lighter.
Living in Alaska, I felt I had to drive around the country to see it a little bit. Yellowstone, Chicago, New York, the blue ridge mountains, Monticello, the swamps of Louisiana, Carslbad cavern, the Grand Canyon, driving through the desert in a sports car were all highlights for me. I got pulled over speeding through Yellowstone and the woman ranger who pulled me over must have talked to me for about 20 minutes about roadtrips. She wrote me a ticket which I originally thought was for 800 dollars, but on closer inspection, the 8 was a $, so it was a ticket for $00. Awesome.
Be prepared to develop a strong hatred for minivan drivers. The will ride your bumper endlessly when you're in the left lane. As soon as you pull over to let them pass, they freeze up, jiggle the steering wheel and then floor it to pass you. Then they slow down to 5 mph slower than you had originally been driving. Happened to me at least 50 times.
My personal record for the most amount of miles driven in the shortest period of time was driving from Seattle to Anchorage in 36 hours flat. That's around 2,500 miles. In a pickup truck. And we had to stop to get a tire replaced. I did it with a friend of mine, and we still can't figure out how we made it from Seattle at midnight Friday night to Anchorage at noon on Sunday. We were popping no-doze and downing diet coke the whole way. My friend flipped out at one point claming he saw a pack of bears. When we turned back to check it out, it was a couple of ponies on the side of the road. We did get to see some bison though.
Best response yet.. ^^^^^^^^^^^^ I too have driven c.c. more than 4x in vehicles ranging from a vw Scirocco, A porsche 928s also 2 Mercedes a S-class and a C-class. You will be in the car long beyond the point when you want to get out... Comfort should be the only deciding factor in your choice of vehicle...No Doze in large quantity will make you very ill...Try cocaine instead
