Bad usually. Depends. Can't stand the crowds and the maze-like set up. The furniture is banal, but there are some good things, but you only know they're good if you're into design; i.e, they're replicas of expensive items you covet from other brands or they're so unique it doesn't scream IKEA.

I bought some stuff from there, mostly stainless steel stuff like toilet paper holder, paper towel dispenser, kitchen timer, utensil holder that I use for my markets and wall hooks.

I really like this setup, if I had a bigger place then I would buy it, the price is actually $1,555.00:

^^^ That better include the LCD TV too, because that pile of veneered press board is definitely not worth $1555. For that much you could "talk" to Monica Foster for several hours. Yeah, you're right the press board is the better deal.

So what that it is press board? As long as it holds the stuff inside, looks good and priced cheap; what is the problem?

You bury poor people in press board coffins, that's the only good use for it. I never thought I'd see the day where you could be so easily ripped off, Alex.

He's never spent more than $15.55 on anything in his life. From the looks of it, he prolly stole that shite from the set of A Very Brady Christmas.

Let's say you want an "entertainment wall" like that shown above. But you want "quality" you don't want any "pressboard". BTW, pressboard is not the correct term. Pressboard is less thyan 1/16" thick and used as a separator in sheet good packaging.

H2Cit meant to sav "particleboard". It is dense and very susceptible to humidity and is not structurally sound. Most modern furniture and cabinets are made from "MDF" (medium density fiberboard) with a laminate of melamine on low use surfaces with hppl on the exterior surfaces.

I'll guess less than five registered users on xxxporntalk would insist on "real wood" cabinets versus what is available and serviceable now because "real wood" cabinets cost so much more and warp so much more. And real wood cabinets are just plywood with a veneer.

I've never been in an Ikea, but the products from there I've seen at friends are at least delivering good design at affordable prices.

I think that that "entertainment wall unit" is an excellent deal for $1,555.00. I don't give a hoot about any fancy materials, I just want it to last for 10-15 years. It is very Soviet-looking and that is why I like it so much. Show me a better deal for $1,555 or less and I will agree that I was ripped-off. BTW, here are the material stats:

TV storage unit:
Main parts: Particleboard, Foil, ABS plastic
Top panel/ Bottom panel: Particleboard, Foil, Particleboard, Honeycomb structure recycled paper filling, ABS plastic
Back panel: Particleboard, Foil
Back/ Drawer bottom: Fiberboard, Acrylic paint
Drawer front: Fiberboard, Tempered/safety glass, Foil, ABS plastic

Shelf unit/height extension unit/ shelf unit:
Back: Fiberboard, Foil, Foil
Main parts: Particleboard, Fiberboard, Foil, Honeycomb structure recycled paper filling
Top panel/ Bottom panel: Particleboard, Fiberboard, Foil, Honeycomb structure recycled paper filling, Polypropylene

Glass door:
Frame: Aluminum
Glass panel: Tempered/safety glass
Door panel: Fiberboard, Foil

Door/ drawer front:
Particleboard, Foil, Foil, Foil, Foil

Drawer without front:
Main parts: Particleboard, Foil
Drawer bottom: Fiberboard, Acrylic paint

Push latch:
Acetal plastic

Nope, I meant press board. It's all just sawdust and glue, but then again I call a Radical Islamic Extremist a Muslim Terrorist.

Then you will be ripped off. After a year or two the shelves will start to sag, the doors will begin to close crookedly, and the drawers will go off their tracks. After a maximum of a five year life span you will have to pay someone to haul it to the dump for you.

I took only one year of wood shop in high school, but the first thing that popped out on that picture was that the wood grain isn't lined up to match. It looks a lot like a patch work quilt. Now supposing that isn't a real wood veneer, and I am pretty damn sure in that assumption, the fact that they couldn't even be bothered to print a matching grain, for the doors, on the melamine, should be a big clue to it's over all crappy design. But hey, it's your money, if you want to throw it away, that's not my problem.

They have 10 year warranty on this wall unit. You still can't provide me a better deal for $1,555. If you can't provide that deal to me then provide the deal that you think in your own mind is the best for tv wall unit.

The Sham-wow on TV has a ten year warranty too. The cheapest price isn't always the best deal. When you understand why that is, then you've learned a real grownup lesson.

I didn't say you shouldn't buy it, it's your money, throw it away if you want. After a few years come back here and tell us all how great it still is. And no, I won't furniture shop for you.

No, the desk was from AKO: the Russian furniture superstore in Brooklyn. I have bed, mattress and shelves from IKEA.

I usually don't buy larger items aside from mirrors and stuff but I have an ikea bed frame and for the most part it's cool, I can stand and walk on the side flap thing and it's really sturdy. Will it last 10 years, probably not but I tend to change things up every few years anyway. If I was buying something that I wanted to keep for a while, I'd rather spend a little more and have peace of mind.
btw my friend has one of those type of units for her playroom and she has complained so many times about doors falling off and the whole thing just being jenky all around.

Yes, you have to transport it too because deliverfy starts at $70.00. I figured that if I buy the unlimited MetroCard for 1 day then I can make 4-5 round trips to the store and get the whole thing home.

I also remembered that I have 2 bookcases that I bought at IKEA 2 years ago for $19.99 each. They do not sell these bookcases anymore because they figured that the deal was too good and that they did not make lots of profit on it. Now a comparable bookcase costs $34.99

In general, Ikea sucks. Big time.

The steel utensils, that TP mentioned, are above average. Some other things (pillows, chairs, etc.) are value for money. I have a bed plus mattresses from Ikea. Decent, but it won't last a lifetime (I'm already thinking about replacing it after 5 years.).

Wooden furniture from IKEA is 95% shyte.
A few items are from more or less solid wood and can be used for a longer period of time (I have a cupboard and a thing with drawers like that. It's still in good shape after 10 years.)
The 95% is from presswood or whatever name it has. It's what h2c and B described: garbage wood, held together by loads of (toxic?) glue. The self-assembly means, that after a few years, you pull open a drawer and are standing with the front part in your hands, while the drawer is still neatly positioned on its sliders. It's a one time thing: you can assemble, but if you want to move and take it apart, you're done. You'll never manage to put it back together again in such a way that it has any structural strength. In the last 15 years I've tossed a lot of cupboards, dressoirs, etc. out of windows of moving friends: straight onto the pyre.

When you live on a marginal budget, don't need to move your furniture and couldn't care less about appearances, IKEA ain't that bad. Otherwise: stay away.
