My mailman used to deliver all the letters and similar mail first on his foot tour of the neighborhood then go back and drive his vehicle around to deliver packages at the end. It was less hassle for him and less chance of losing or breaking a package. Sorry you aren't the center of your mailman's universe that he feels compelled to sort all your mail separate and hand deliver it to you so its most convenient for you at the expense of his time while complicating his job. I would suggest giving him a better tip or more expensive bottle of booze at Chrismas. Maybe your SO doesn't blow him as well as other ladies on the block.
