I went hiking yesterday on a trail I've hiked at least thirty times and have never seen one snake on. Yesterday I saw five of these motherfuckers and twice damn near stepped on one of them. It may be time to rethink the concept of wearing sandals when I go hiking. And yes these are two of the motherfuckers I saw yesterday, not the two I almost stepped on though.

I saw a guy and his small son teasing a copperhead with short sticks on a dirt trail in Valley Forge park. When I pointed out that he was endangering his kid(maybe 6 years old) by harassing a copperhead the guy informed me I was stupid and that there were no dangerous snakes in PA and even if there were they wouldn't be allowed in the Park. He sure taught me. While distracting the guy with the argument I got a longer stick and chased the snake into the brush and away from the little boy. The guy was pissed and I told him to report me to a ranger.

i spent a combined 11 hours in sweet watery hell with these guys a few weeks back in grand turk. reef sharks, nurse sharks, 4-5' barracuda and a rare hammerhead - basically big house cats until you get up into the larger varieties like tigers/bulls/whites. so i was about as interesting to them as celery sticks to Taryn Thomas, and they pretty much just did drive-bys where they come at you head on and then turn at the last second to see "what you got" and "can they have some".
then on the last day, Dolphins on the run from The Japan so i went in to check it out.
Since this trip I was informed by a board member that scuba is not a quarter homo, not half homo, but full homo and also queer, and that free diving is where its at on account of "an explosion of bubbles not following you everywhere scaring the shit out of fish" to be able to "just fucking freeshaft everything". thanks, jamesn. so that's next i guess, carbon fins and shallow water blackout here we come.

Redgoat, how about doing an image search on this with tineye or whatever it's called? Captain Adventure probably took that pic from the Encyclopedia Britania article on sharks or some shit like that.

You should always be wearing boots when hiking anyway!
But yeah..if you leave them alone, they will likely leave yo alone. Most snakes are solitary, skittish creatures..esp around humans (and this is coming from someone who has been bitten by snakes a million times and was almost killed by a 20 foot long Burmese Python!). Wear good boots,tuck your pants into them, watch where you walk and you will be fine.

My best friend is a school principal and he told me about a kid who came to the office because a bee flew INTO his ear. It was one of the kinds that don't die after they sting you. A wasp or something. Anyways, it went like this: "Oh Christ!!! Fuck!!!! Holy shit!! Goddamn!!! I've been stung by a bee before, but this is like 57 fucking times worse!!!! Aaaaaaah!!!" They couldn't get it out of his ear, either. So they kept pouring water into his ear until it died, then they sent the kid to the ER.

I wear hiking boots generally from November to April but my feet sweat way too much to deal with them in the warm months. My feet would smell worse than Panzer's bedroom if I wore them in the summertime. The sandals I wear are pretty heavy duty outdoors sandals, they're not flip-flops. And yes, I'm aware of the hazards of hiking while wearing them. Plus with sandals I don't have to stop and knock pebbles, twigs, wood chips, mud clods, and whatever else out of my shoes every half mile.
Conq, wearing steel wool pants in the summertime in Kansas would be like wearing a sauna.
Steezo, when I was five years old I felt something crawling around in my hair one summer afternoon when I was outside. Without thinking I brushed it down with my hand. It was a hornet and I ended up brushing it right down into my eye where it stung me, not a pleasant experience.

What kind of socks do you wear in your hiking boots? Cotton and cotton blends are horrible. Find a light all synthetic sock that will wick moisture away and not hold it. If you go on long hikes air out your feet during a rest stop and change to fresh socks. It makes a difference.
