I was in the process of posting here [and downloading as per usual] when suddenly every time I tried to go on a website I would get a page telling me that Internet Explorer determined that the page was infected ... which was especially odd since I was on Firefox.

While trying to understand what was happening, I kept getting popups about infections and attacks and running a software to stop the attacks/infections.

I had experience something similar before that my mom's PC contracted, so I restarted, went into safe mode, went back 3 or so system rollbacks on system restore and restarted.

All is fine now, but BOY that was quite scary.



The only thing I think I added was an update to Java. Maybe they are faking those now.

Same thing happened here today. I ran spybot and removed several spyware entries. No prob now.

That sounds exactly what I went through last week. Was it spygeek.something or another?

I just had to deal with it again on my laptop. There were several entries. One had the word burst in it. I should have looked more closely.

You guys musta been watching Load My Mouth scenes. They are infections waiting to happen.

All appear to be tracking cookies. How does that explain a malware program trying to install itself by faking results ?

I know I clicked on a Java of Flash update without really checking it out. The strange stuff started about an hour or so later.

After my rollback repair and near-death-PC-experience, I decide to heed others advice and change from free virus protection to a paid service.

At least now I have someone to yell at.

I'm looking at my notes. It was Java.

And, based on the update that's running right now, it was a phony one.

It popped up said I needed an update and didn't have to reboot, so I hit a few confirmations and I let the bad guys into my registry.

It isn't anything like the update running now [asking about OpenOffice and Yahoo toolbars with an Oracle logo].

I wasn't careful and let in a PC terrorist.




At least that's how it was for me ...
